Giving Voice to the Land’s Caregivers

The Maasai word “Il’laramatak” means “caregiver.” Our grants, totaling $150,200 over four years, supports the work of Il’laramatak Community Concerns (ICC) aimed at those who take care of the grazing lands of Kenya. Focusing on Kenya’s Kajiado County, ICC ensures that indigenous peoples, and especially women and girls, participate in climate change policy discussions and planning processes. ICC proposed to create new Kajiado County Climate Change Network that will advocate for county legislation to implement the National Climate Change Act locally.

Why ICC?

Best known for mobilizing a grassroots network to fight Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and promote girls’ rights, Il’laramatak Community Concerns is a powerful grassroots changemaker. Their work led to the creation of Kenya’s first county law prohibiting FGM and made Kajiado County the national leader in FGM reduction. Their recent turn toward climate justice means more momentum for the Kajiado, and for Kenya.
